MARC was found in 2001 at Nanjing University followed by the events that the "The Tenth Five-Year-Plan" key project of Dept of Science and technology, P. R. China, Establishment of National Genetically Engineered Mice Resource Bank, was awarded to Nanjing University and Yangzhou University, which was led by Dr. Xiang Gao. Taking the world leading institutes, such as The Jackson lab and The whitehead institute, as examples, the ul timate goal of MARC is to develop itself to be one of the leading biomedical research center in China and in the world. The philosophy of MRAC is competitive and collaborative. MARC is adopting principle investigator (PI) and faculty system, a competitive administrative system that generally is used in the developed countries, different from the current administrative system in China.
In October 2001, molecular biologist Dr. Xiang Gao was appointed as director of the MARC. Dr. Gao leads a scientific staff consisting of 8 faculty members.Model Animal Research Center (MARC) of Nanjing University is a non-profit, relatively independent research and educational institution. It is affiliated with Nanjing University in its teaching activities but independent in its gover- nance, finances, and research programs, referred as special discipline zone (SDZ) of Nanjing University. The research inte- rest of MARC covers genetics, develop-mental biology, bioinformatics, functional genomics, and transgenic sci- ence. It emphasizes on programs in the studies on human diseases using different model animal systems such as mouse, zebrafish, fruit fly, and nematode worm. Currently, research projects at MARC involve establishment of multiple disease models including cardiovascular diseases, cancer , neural tube defect and the acute infectious disease (eg. SARS). The mission of the MARC is to improve human health and welfare and extend the boundaries of knowledge for future generations.
The MARC is guided by a Board of Directors, chaired by Dr. Xiang Gao, and by a Board of Advisory Scientists composed of well-known biologists. In addition, members of the MARC Board of Associates serve as ambassadors for the Institute. They support the Institute's scientific mission through personal philanthropy and by sharing their leadership skills in science, business, finance, education, communication, and other fieldsCurrently, MRAC has 8 faculty members. Each member run his/her own labs and has his/her own contract with the director of MARC. MARC also has adjunct professors from other world well-known universities and research institutions.MARC provides Ph.D programs in genetics, informatics and biochemistry. MRAC also provides advanced scientific training or courses to visiting scientists, post-doctors, graduate students, and senior undergraduates from universities and research institutions around the China.MRAC is located at the West to Xuefu Road, Pukou High-tech Zone, Nanjing, P.R.China, 210093. With the building completed in June 2003, it has the state-of-the-art research facilities in life science.
The National GEMRB--Genetically Engineered Mice Resources Bank
The idea of establishing the China national genetically engineered mice resources bank was first introduced in 1998 by Dr. Yinian Ba, member of Chinese Science Academy, and Dr. Yilong Liu. In 2001, the Dept of Science and Technology, P. R. China formally announced the project and the Universities and the research institutions national wide started to compete for the project. Among several very competitive applications, the plan wrote by Nanjing University and Yangzou University, led by Dr. Gao Xiang, was ranked in the highest score, by the selective committee. Therefore, in 2001, the Dept of Science and Technology, P. R. China, award the project, Establishment of The National Genetically Engineered Mice Resources Bank as one of the key projects of "the tenth five-year plan", to Nanjing University and Yangzhou University. The project is led by Dr. Gao Xiang. In May 2002, the buildings for The National Genetically Engineered Mice Resources Bank started to construct. By June 2003, the construction was accomplished and the mice started to move in the facilities. Thus, after 100 years after The Jackson Laboratory was founded (in 1902) in USA to collect the mice strains for life science research, like German GSF,……, China has its own facility to collect, store and provide mice strains for the biomedical research community in China.
The National Genetically Engineered Mice Resources Bank was located at West to Xufu Road, Pukou High-tech zone, Nanjing, 210093. It has 700 square meters state-of-art facilities for storing and breeding the gene- tically modified mice created by Chinese life science research community.
The task of The National Genetically Engineered Mice Resources Bank is to collect and store the any genetically modified mice strains created in China. It is also to import scientifically important mice strains from aboard, such as USA and Germany and provided mice strains nationwide. The MARC is making her effort to enable The National Genetically Engineered Mice Resources Bank one of the recognized institutions world-widely.
In October 2002, mouse geneticist Dr. Xiang Gao served as director of The National Genetically Engineered Mice Resources Bank.
