Guangzhou General Practice Skill Training Center is the Second Step in Welch Allyn Helping Further Chinese Initiative to Improve Community Health Care
Welch Allyn and the Guangzhou Medical College, Guangdong Province, China, today announced the opening of the Welch Allyn Guangdong General Practice Skill Training Center for Medical Practitioners, a facility to be used for training of general practitioners (GP). The training center was established to help further the Chinese government initiative to improve access to health care through the construction of more community and rural health care clinics.
“Welch Allyn is pleased to partner with Guangzhou Medical College in this exciting initiative to bring greater access to health care throughout China,” said Julie Shimer, president and CEO of Welch Allyn. “The Guangdong General Practice Skill Training Center is another vital step toward putting more skilled general practitioners on the frontlines of health care, and we are eager to use our resources in diagnostic and general practice medicine to assist this critical effort.”
This is the second of six training centers sponsored by Welch Allyn. The training centers will prepare approximately 900 GPs annually through a “train-the-trainer” program designed to educate the thousands of GPs expected to be needed to staff new primary care facilities planned across China. The first Clinical Skills Training Center was opened at the West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University, in March 2009, through a partnership between Welch Allyn and West China Hospital (Huaxi).
Affiliated to Guangzhou Medical College, Guangdong Educational Training Center is an official organization approved by the provincial Ministry of Health to perform on-the-job training and issue professional certificates for the province’s GPs. The goal of this establishment is to improve general practitioners’ skills and standardize community health services in the Guangdong Province.
It is a designated training center by the provincial Ministry of Health for continuation of education and on-the-job training for the GPs. In addition, regular training classes for community clinic doctors are organized at this center.
“This center will play an integral role in our efforts to provide Chinese doctors and physicians with a comprehensive training program that will educate them in all aspects of family and primary care medicine,” said Sue Dubay, senior manager, Clinical, Medical & Scientific Affairs at Welch Allyn. “Through additional support from Heart to Heart International and the American Osteopathic Foundation, we have developed a successful program that will help transform the country’s medical system from the current specialty care system to one based on primary care. We are honored to assist the people of China with such a meaningful endeavor.
The School of Public Health and General Practice at Guangzhou Medical College is one of only two medical colleges in China with an established general practitioner specialty and specializes in Preventive Medicine, General Practice Medicine, and Chemical Cancer Research. General Practice Medicine is one of the key disciplines of the Guangzhou Medical College.
Increasing the number of community health care settings across China and staffing them with skilled general practitioners will help diagnose and treat common conditions before they become more serious and costly, said Shimer: Building more community clinics, training more GPs and supplying them with high-quality Welch Allyn diagnostic instruments is a significant step in improving the overall standard of health care in China. We are so pleased to be a part of an undertaking that will give Chinese citizens much greater access to better quality frontline health care.
The Guangdong Educational Training Center features Welch Allyn devices typical of those used in community clinics, including an integrated diagnostic system, ECG, ambulatory blood pressure monitor, and electronic vital signs devices. All medical devices used at the training center are environmentally friendly and 100 percent mercury free, demonstrating a determination to build a “green clinic.” Activities conducted at the training center will be used as case studies for the China Medical Doctors Association (CMDA) in its effort to establish national GP training standards.
