Pfizer Extends Relationship with Peking University for Drug Discovery

Pfizer will provide funds to support projects “of mutual interest,” and it will help support a translational research and drug discovery centre that PKU intends to build.

Pfizer and Peking University, Shenzhen Graduate School, will collaborate to develop novel technologies for drug discovery. Pfizer will provide funds to support projects “of mutual interest,” and it will help support a translational research and drug discovery centre that PKU intends to build. The two parties expect the pact will aid the long-term development of biopharma in Shenzhen and the entire country. At PKU’s Shenzhen campus, The Drug Discovery Centre will seek to translate basic research and clinical observations into effective disease diagnostic, prevention and clinical intervention. The research, which will emphasise indigenous biomedical innovation, will focus on cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurodegenerative diseases. The research projects sponsored by Pfizer in this initiative will be selected and developed by Pfizer scientists and PKU professors jointly, including professors in PKU’s main campus and the Health Science Centre in Beijing. The new initiative builds on an existing relationship between Pfizer and PKU. Earlier this year, the two parties announced the formation of the PKU-Pfizer Quantitative Pharmacology Education Centre, which was given the goal of developing scientists with quantitative pharmacology skills. Pfizer pledged 3 million RMB ($430,000) over several years to the partnership. In addition to PKU, Pfizer has established strategic biomedical research partnerships with three institutions in California – Scripps Research Institute, UCSF QB3 – as well as the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences.
