China medical reform will halt the development of retail pharmacies, said Jingxia Wang, president of the Chain Pharmacy Branch of the China Association of Pharmaceutical Commerce. The comment was made during the 2009 management forum of retail chain drug stores held in Hainan Province June 16. According to Wang, the new medical reform supports the development of community medical centers, which will become another competitor for selling prescription drugs and will eventually attract consumers away from retail pharmacies. The zero mark-up policy implemented in community health centers will force retail pharmacies to reduce their profit margin, and patients may find it easier to get reimbursement at health centers compared to retail drugstores. |
