DHL boost life science space in Shanghai

DHL has opened a new life sciences facility at Shanghai Pudong airport, taking its temperature controlled warehouse space in the mainland city to 30,000 sq ft.

DHL has opened a new life sciences facility at Shanghai Pudong airport, taking its temperature controlled warehouse space in the mainland city to 30,000 sq ft. Called the DHL Life Science and Healthcare Competence Centre, the facility is a 2,000 sq ft temperature control warehouse (15°C to 25°C) and will house a core team of industry experts responsible for developing bespoke products and solutions, and provide consultancy services, to customers in China and north Asia. The life science and healthcare industry has been developing rapidly in recent years with China emerging as a market with the greatest growth potential. The Asia Pacific pharmaceutical market generated total revenues of US$118.3 billion in 2008, representing a compound annual growth rate of 6.6 percent for the period 2004-2008. The Chinese pharmaceutical market grew the fastest with CAGR of 21.1 percent from 2004 to 2008 and is projected to grow further. The life science and healthcare industry in China holds its own despite the global economic crisis, said Steve Huang, managing director, DHL Global Forwarding China: We are optimistic that this sector will continue to offer promising growth. China ranks ninth place in the world pharmaceutical market in terms of market size. It is forecast that the China pharmaceutical market will continue to maintain a double-digit growth in the next few years and will jump to the sixth place by 2011. DHL Global Forwarding is strengthening its cold chain logistics capabilities to meet anticipated industry growth and the increasingly sophisticated needs of life science and healthcare customers in Asia Pacific. The new competence center adds to DHL\'s expanding list of healthcare facilities around the globe. The next planned opening later this year in Asia Pacific is Melbourne, said Sue Arden, vice-president, life sciences and healthcare Asia Pacific, for DHL Global Customer Solutions.
