Organized by Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute, Dr. Jin-Fu Chang, Minister of State of the Executive Yuan, and Dr. Johnsee Lee, President of Taiwan BIO Industry Organization unveiled the availability of $ 1.9 billion venture fund, during 2010 Bio Convention held in Chicago. The fund comprised of both public and private money for biotech development in the country. A delegation comprised of representatives from Taiwan’s industrial, research, and government sectors attended to promote international cooperation and generate business opportunities. The mega fund, together with other initiatives, is a bold move by the government of Taiwan to make Taiwan a significant player in the global biotechnology development. Geographically positioned close to the growing markets of Asia-Pacific region including China, Taiwan is an indispensable linkage of the biotech development between Asia–Pacific region and the world. With superior pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities, and world-class biotech research professionals, biotech is among six sectors targeted by Taiwan government to become next emerging industries. To ensure its success, Taiwan’s government has also launched a strategic plan called “Taiwan Biotechnology Takeoff Diamond Action Plan,” aimed to make sure that government regulatory process, translational capability for developing promising research leads, and venture incubation mechanism are in place. This plan aims to provide an efficient process to translate promising early stage research results, through pre-clinical development for new drug and medical devices, into sustainable biotech business.
